Layers, not products
Effective residential security in Zimbabwe is layered: deterrence at the boundary (wall, electric fence, lighting), detection (beams, alarm sensors, CCTV with analytics), and response (armed response contract, panic buttons, a guard on site). Buying only one layer creates a false sense of safety — cameras record burglaries they cannot prevent.

Contract clauses to negotiate
Ask for the guaranteed response time in your specific suburb and what happens if it's missed. Ask how many vehicles are on shift covering your zone at 2am, not how many the company owns. Ask about guard vetting, rotation policy and whether the same guard works your property indefinitely — long static postings are a known collusion risk.

CCTV that is actually usable
Most installed CCTV produces footage that cannot identify anybody. Insist on adequate resolution at the identification distance — a 4MP camera at 12 metres is not the same as at 3 metres — infrared performance at night, on-site plus cloud recording, and at least 21 days of retention. Test playback with the installer before final payment.

Do electric fences need certification?
Yes — they must be installed to standard with correct energiser rating, warning signage and an isolation point. Ask for the compliance certificate.
Can I keep my alarm if I change companies?
Only if you own the equipment. Many 'free' installations remain company property — check the contract.
