Most moving damage happens in the last two metres — the doorway. Here's how to pick a crew that knows that.

What a move costs

Prices vary with volume, distance and whether packing is included:

  • Small flat move within Harare (1-bed): $80 – $180
  • 3-bedroom house, same city: $200 – $450
  • Harare to Bulawayo, 3-bedroom: $500 – $950
  • Packing service and materials: $80 – $250
  • Piano, safe or gym equipment surcharge: $60 – $200
  • Storage, per month per container load: $60 – $150

Vetting a removals company

Insist on a site visit or a video walkthrough before quoting — a company quoting blind will either under-quote and demand more on the day, or send an undersized truck. Confirm the truck size in cubic metres, the crew size, and whether the quoted price is fixed or hourly.

  • Physical business address and registration
  • Written fixed quote after a survey, not a phone estimate
  • Goods-in-transit insurance — ask for the policy, not a promise
  • Blankets, straps and trolleys as standard, not extras
  • Clear policy on damage claims and time limits

Four-week countdown

Four weeks out: book the mover and start decluttering. Three weeks: begin packing non-essentials and arrange ZESA, water and internet transfers. Two weeks: confirm access, lift bookings and parking at both ends. One week: pack an essentials box — kettle, bedding, chargers, medication, tools, toilet paper — and photograph valuable items.

Insurance reality check

Standard removals liability is often capped at a token amount per item, which will not replace a television. If you have high-value items, buy declared-value cover for the move and photograph everything before loading. Note damage on the delivery note before the crew leaves — claims made after they drive off are routinely rejected.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book?

Two to four weeks. Month-end and December are the busiest and most expensive periods.

Should I pack myself?

Packing yourself saves money but usually voids damage cover on those boxes. Let the movers pack fragile and high-value items.

Do movers dismantle furniture?

Most do for beds and standard flat-pack. Confirm in advance, and keep fittings in a labelled bag taped to the item.
